Oppulent, Stunning, Surreal, Theatrical, Elegant and Erotic: all words accurately describing the three dimensional artistry of EIKO ISHIOKA (1938 - 2012), respected the world over as one of the leading visual designers in
multi media formats. Born in Tokyo in 1939 she was first noticed by the public via her ad campaigns
for the affluent PARCO IKEBUKRUO stores - her final one featuring
American actress Faye Dunaway. She would go on to win a Grammy for visual design on Miles Davis’ legendary “TUTU” album, a Tony nomination
for David Henry Hwang’s M. BUTTERFLY, and a Cannes Film Festival Award
for Artistic Contribution for Production Design on director Paul
Schrader’s stylishly filmed 1985 biopic MISHIMA: A LIFE IN FOUR
CHAPTERS.
More recently she’s directed Bjork’s music video “COCOON”, designed
the costumes for CIRQUE DU SOLEIL: VAREKAI (2002), the 2008 NAGANO JAPAN OLYMPICS Opening Ceremonies, Grace Jones’ 2009 “HURRICANE” Tour, and Broadway’s current
SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE DARK
stage musical among others. She is perhaps most recognized however for her theatrically regal film costume designs, including the Oscar winning BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA for director Francis Ford Coppola in 1992 .
Among her other cinema works are the award
winning CLOSET LAND (1991), as well as four films for director Tarsem Singh: the 2000 psychological thriller THE CELL, the fantasy epic THE FALL (2006) ,
IMMORTALS (2011), and the upcoming Grimm Bros. fairy tale adaptation, MIRROR, MIRROR (2012) starring Lily Collins, Julia Roberts and Armie Hammer.
